From the BBC programme Front Row Interviews, 8 January 2012. Since the bulk of a medieval army was made up of levied men who had to bring their own armor most could not afford the more expensive shields made from limewood. That had to do with the composition of medieval armies. The majority of medieval shields were not made from the better but more expensive limewood but rather from the cheaper alternatives. The best medieval shields were made out of limewood but cheaper alternatives like fir, alder, or poplar could also be used. Here you can find out more about the price of medieval armor and weapons. Just like with other medieval armor the quality depended on the amount of money that the buyer could spend. The first step on the journey to a finished medieval shield was finding suitable wood. Step one: Gluing together the wooden boards It took a total of five steps to building a medieval shield. And that effectiveness didn`t happen by chance but as a result of a sophisticated building process. So now we have found out that medieval shields were highly effective in protecting their bearer. How were shields built in the Middle Ages? For more information on why (and when) knights stopped using shields and whether or not they actually completely stopped using shields you might want to check out my article here.īut let`s now look at the sophisticated process that was necessary to build a shield in the Middle Ages. Because of that shields would remain extremely common among foot soldiers even when knights started to use shields less and less. You can find more information on the price of medieval shields compared to other types of medieval armor in my article here. Shields were probably the cheapest piece of armor that was available during the Middle Ages. The second reason was the price of medieval shields compared to other parts of medieval armor. But blows that were delivered with enough force could still break the bones under the chainmail even without cutting through.īecause of that, it was better to deflect the enemy’s weapon with a shield instead of hoping that the body armor (like the chainmail) would stop the attack. Chainmail offered good protection against cuts. And that was actually quite important since even though medieval armor was highly effective it did not make a man invulnerable. But apart from that shields also had two big advantages over other pieces of body armor like for example a shirt of chainmail.Īdvantage number one was that a shield protected its bearer before the enemy’s weapon touched his body. The fact alone that they were used throughout the entire Middle Ages proves that. Sources The effectiveness and price of medieval shields.Step five: Reinforcing the rim of the shield with rawhide.Step three: Adding a layer of linen to the surface of the shield.Step two: Adding a protective layer of glue and cloth to the surface of the shield.Step one: Gluing together the wooden boards. How were shields built in the Middle Ages?.The effectiveness and price of medieval shields.Made-to-order artwork ships in only 1 week.Direct from the artist for biggest savings.A metallic border seals the look, and a chain at the back makes for an easy wall display.īrackets are also included that allow for the addition of a set of swords for an even more impressive medieval display. It should automatically find your iPhoto Library and you’ll see it listed at the top, next to iPhoto Library. STEP THREE: If you have the plug-in already installed and running (which is probably the case), or if you just installed it, and then went under the File menu, under Plug-in Extras and chose ‘Import from iPhoto Aperture’), you’ll see the window above. If for some reason it doesn’t appear, go to the Plug-in Manager and turn it on. If you don’t find a Modules folder, you’ll have to make one (just make a new folder name it “Modules”) and drag that plug-in inside that folder. When the Library folder appears, go to the Application Support folder, then go inside the Adobe folder scroll down to the Lightroom folder, and then inside that folder look for a folder named “Module.” That’s where you drag that plug-in you downloaded from Adobe. Once you’ve downloaded it (and unzipped it), go to your Desktop hold the Option key then head up under the “Go” menu and now “Library” will be one of the available menu choices (without holding the Options key, the Library is hidden as a choice). NOTE: If you don’t see it in the list, you can download it from Adobe at this link. If it doesn’t, click the button to the left of its name to activate it. Look at the list of plug-ins on the left side of the of the window (it will be named “Aperture/iPhoto Importer Plug-in” (as seen here), and make sure it says “Installed and running” right underneath it. STEP TWO: To see if the iPhoto import plug-in is installed, but perhaps it’s not running, go under the File menu and choose Plug-in Manager to bring up window you see here. If Import from iPhone Library doesn’t appear in that library, go on to the next step. STEP ONE: Go under Lightroom’s File menu, under Plug-in Extras, and choose “Import from iPhoto Library” (as shown here). NOTE: This is for importing Apple’s discontinued iPhoto application – NOT Apple’s current application named ‘Photos’. I get a decent amount of questions on this topic from folks on my Lightroom seminar tour – so much so I thought I’d cover TWO different methods for importing your iPhoto library into Lightroom here today (btw: it works pretty much the same for importing your Apple Aperture library). ![]()

Īdvanced HeroQuest was a revised and expanded version of the HeroQuest game released in 1989 by Games Workshop. Released shortly after in the same years was Return of the Witch Lord which extended the undead with more skeletons, mummies and zombies. Kellar's Keep added new quests, new items and artifacts and a further batch of monster figures (more Orcs, Goblins and Fimir). Starting with Kellar's Keep, released in Europe and Australasia in 1989, and North America in 1991. The publication of expansion sets was then split between the European and Australasian markets and the North American markets. My feeling is that they play in a very competitive, rather co-operative way." In a 1989 interview, designer Stephen Baker agreed that the game was too easy if the players all cooperated, but explained that "The game is really aimed at 10–12 year olds who play with their mums and dads. The protagonists are four heroes ("Barbarian", "Dwarf", "Elf" and "Wizard") who face a selection of monsters: Orcs, Goblins, Fimir, Chaos Warriors, a Chaos Warlock (which represents many of the named characters for the various quests, such as Sir Ragnar and the Witch Lord), a Gargoyle and a number of Undead: skeletons, zombies and mummies. The game consists of a board and a number of individual miniatures and items. The game was released in Britain, Europe and Australia in 1989, and the North American edition, with a different subtitle - Game system, in 1990. The result was the fantasy adventure board game HeroQuest (1989), in which the players work together against the gamemaster. Basker contacted his former employer, Games Workshop, to develop the plastic miniatures that would be needed in the game, but he then decided to draw on their expertise in the fantasy game field to help develop the game. Kennedy gave him the go-ahead if he kept the game simple. In the late 1980s, game designer Stephen Baker moved from Games Workshop (GW) to Milton Bradley, and convinced Roger Ford, Milton Bradley's head of development to allow him to develop a fantasy genre game. Naughty Dog seriously do know how to constantly make refreshing games with an enjoyable story, characters you care about and gameplay and controls that are easy to pick up and play easily. Besides Jak not speaking for the full length of the game, there isn’t really anything I can complain about. Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy is a game I urge you to play if you need a great platformer, that actually isn’t just a platformer, it’s also got racing, action, adventure, open world and fantasy making this a massive hybrid genre, that you need to play. There are certain parts of the game that you have to collect enough Precursor Orbs to get through, encouraging you to look and explore more in games. The villains aren’t actually seen very much through the game which is unusual for Naughty Dog, as in their previous games such as Uncharted, the villains are seen frequently. ![]() The level design and environments are glorious as well with colours being used everywhere to bring out this vibrant world, thus pulling you into this magnificent fantasy world. ![]() Within the first 5 minutes of the game, Daxter falls into a vat of Dark Eco becoming half Otter, half Weasel and resulting in a comical scene after where Daxter realises what has happened. ![]() Daxter although not having any communication with Jak at any point manages to create comedy and for that I congratulate Naughty Dog. Jak doesn’t speak for the entirety of the game which is a shame, because you don’t get to see the comedy between him and his sidekick Daxter that is seen in the later games. You play as Jak, a normal human tasked with stopping Gol and Maia, 2 sages who were exposed to too much Dark Eco, driving them insane and making them want to fill the world with Dark Eco, shaping it to their liking. The story is well crafted as well, allowing you to like the characters and connect with them. The boss battles in the game aren’t as epic as they are in recent games such as fights in the God of War series or Ratchet and Clank, but they are still well created and for the time absolutely brilliant. There are some moments in the game that were challenging and I miss the times of when games made you frustrated and confused because, it means you spend more time on the game and therefore, get your money’s worth. It took me little more than 5 minutes to get to grips with the controls after not playing it for about 8 or 9 years. The controls feel easy to use as well, with the usual assigned buttons such as X being jump and square being an attack move. ![]() Even though it has been up scaled for a HD screen, the graphics, jagged edges and other graphical qualities have been softened out, and changed so that it still looks great, but they don’t do much work, so at the time of its PS2 release, Jak and Daxter had great visuals created by the Kinetica engine, which had been used on other blockbuster games such as God of War 2 and Wipeout Fusion. The graphics on the game are amazing for its time as well. Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy at the time of release was praised by many people and reviewing companies such as IGN, rating it 8th on their top 25 PS2 games with a score of 9.4 out of 10. I could remember most of the game including a secret ending, (the objective of how to obtain that becomes apparent at the end) and when I played it again, I remembered how much I loved it. Jak and Daxter was always a series I loved when I was younger and playing the first again brought so much nostalgia out of it. Release Date: 3rd December 2001 (Playstation 2) |
