Load times are quick, probably because of the HD upscaled, re-skin. Naughty Dog seriously do know how to constantly make refreshing games with an enjoyable story, characters you care about and gameplay and controls that are easy to pick up and play easily. Besides Jak not speaking for the full length of the game, there isn’t really anything I can complain about. Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy is a game I urge you to play if you need a great platformer, that actually isn’t just a platformer, it’s also got racing, action, adventure, open world and fantasy making this a massive hybrid genre, that you need to play. There are certain parts of the game that you have to collect enough Precursor Orbs to get through, encouraging you to look and explore more in games. The villains aren’t actually seen very much through the game which is unusual for Naughty Dog, as in their previous games such as Uncharted, the villains are seen frequently. ![]() The level design and environments are glorious as well with colours being used everywhere to bring out this vibrant world, thus pulling you into this magnificent fantasy world. ![]() Within the first 5 minutes of the game, Daxter falls into a vat of Dark Eco becoming half Otter, half Weasel and resulting in a comical scene after where Daxter realises what has happened. ![]() Daxter although not having any communication with Jak at any point manages to create comedy and for that I congratulate Naughty Dog. Jak doesn’t speak for the entirety of the game which is a shame, because you don’t get to see the comedy between him and his sidekick Daxter that is seen in the later games. You play as Jak, a normal human tasked with stopping Gol and Maia, 2 sages who were exposed to too much Dark Eco, driving them insane and making them want to fill the world with Dark Eco, shaping it to their liking. The story is well crafted as well, allowing you to like the characters and connect with them. The boss battles in the game aren’t as epic as they are in recent games such as fights in the God of War series or Ratchet and Clank, but they are still well created and for the time absolutely brilliant. There are some moments in the game that were challenging and I miss the times of when games made you frustrated and confused because, it means you spend more time on the game and therefore, get your money’s worth. It took me little more than 5 minutes to get to grips with the controls after not playing it for about 8 or 9 years. The controls feel easy to use as well, with the usual assigned buttons such as X being jump and square being an attack move. ![]() Even though it has been up scaled for a HD screen, the graphics, jagged edges and other graphical qualities have been softened out, and changed so that it still looks great, but they don’t do much work, so at the time of its PS2 release, Jak and Daxter had great visuals created by the Kinetica engine, which had been used on other blockbuster games such as God of War 2 and Wipeout Fusion. The graphics on the game are amazing for its time as well. Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy at the time of release was praised by many people and reviewing companies such as IGN, rating it 8th on their top 25 PS2 games with a score of 9.4 out of 10. I could remember most of the game including a secret ending, (the objective of how to obtain that becomes apparent at the end) and when I played it again, I remembered how much I loved it. Jak and Daxter was always a series I loved when I was younger and playing the first again brought so much nostalgia out of it. Release Date: 3rd December 2001 (Playstation 2)
